Welcome back to our workshop diary. A lot of you have asked how a personalized wooden wedding guest book actually comes together — so here's a look at the whole process, from a blank panel of wood to the finished album we ship to your door.
The clip above is short, but it covers the heart of the process. Here's what's happening at each stage.
1. It Starts with Solid Wood
Every wedding guest book begins as a flat panel of premium wood — Baltic Birch, oak, or walnut, depending on the design. We choose boards with a clean, even grain, because the engraving only looks as good as the surface underneath it. Cheaper guest books use printed cardboard covers; ours are real wood that ages well and won't peel or fade.
2. Laser Engraving Your Names
Next comes the part most people want to see: the engraving. We set up your unique design — your names, your wedding date, a monogram, or a custom phrase — and the laser burns it into the wood to create a deep, tactile finish you can feel with your fingertips. Because it's engraved and not printed, it becomes a permanent part of the cover.
3. Sanding and a Protective Finish
Once the engraving is done, each cover is sanded smooth by hand. Then we seal every album with a protective lacquer — we use premium Italian lacquers, which also let us add your chosen cover color. This finish is what gives the wood its furniture-quality look and protects the engraving so it won't fade or wear, even after years of being handled and displayed.
4. Printing Your Personalized Pages
If you've chosen personalized inside pages, this is where they come to life. We design a custom layout for the interior — to match your names, your event, or your theme — and print the pages in-house. Whether you're keeping it as a classic sign-in book or a Polaroid-style photo guest book, the pages are made to fit the way you want to use it.
5. Assembly by Hand
With the cover finished and the pages printed, we assemble each album from all its individual parts by hand — binding the pages into the wooden cover and checking every detail. The pages are thick enough for guests to write a long message, sign their name, or stick a Polaroid or Instax photo right next to it.
6. Packing and Shipping
Finally, each guest book is carefully packed to arrive safe and ready for your event day. Every book is made by us — Vlad and Natalie — in our family workshop, the same way we've been making wedding and event keepsakes for over a decade. Nothing is mass-produced; each one is made to order after you approve a free digital proof. For US orders, your book ships from our Minnesota warehouse, so it arrives quickly with no customs delays.
